Estimation of the degradation of strawberries during rail transport from knowledge and experiences made on roads trips

Study context and objective

This study, conducted by Jean-Baptiste Nolot, is set in the context of growing concern for the quality of fruits and vegetables during transportation. The main objective is to assess the impact of different modes of transport, namely rail and truck, on the degradation of strawberries. The need to understand and minimize these damages is crucial to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of the food supply chain.

Applied methodology

To carry out this research, a rigorous methodology was adopted. It includes the use of data loggers to record environmental conditions and vertical vibrations during transportation. Additionally, transport simulation protocols were established to faithfully reproduce road and rail transport conditions. These simulations allowed studying the effect of vibrations and transport conditions on the quality of strawberries.

Analyses and results

The results reveal significant differences in the levels of strawberry degradation, depending on the mode of transport and the type of container used. Strawberries transported by rail and truck showed varying levels of damage, indicating the significant influence of the mode of transport on product quality. The study also compared the performance of different types of containers, including wooden crates, plastic, and cardboard boxes, as well as fruit trays, to determine which provided the best protection against damage during transport.

Conclusions and recommendations

In conclusion, this research provides important insights into the best practices for transporting fruits and vegetables, particularly strawberries. The recommendations from the study highlight the importance of choosing the appropriate mode of transport and container type to minimize damage and preserve product quality. These findings are crucial for stakeholders in the food supply chain, aiming to optimize transport logistics while ensuring the freshness and quality of delivered products.
